It was a certain kind of warmth Bucky hadn't found anywhere else. He wondered what her reaction would be - her little James growing up to live the life he had. A glance at the mirror and he saw the lines, scars laced with regret and guilt. Her thumb swiped away a tear while her cheeks stained. Hurt in her expression and he couldn't dare imagine seeing her happy anymore.
Arms wrapped over shoulders, he didn't want her to feel the metal. He felt himself sink to the floor, bathroom tiles like ice against bare skin. Guilt burned in his chest as he watched his best friend suffer due to his own inability. After two days of Bucky only waking up for a couple of seconds every few hours in utter agony, Pepper had Happy deliver some specialized pain meds. Apparently Tony had Stark Tech develop them for Steve back in the day. Sam had called her afterwards and thanked her profusely, asking if there was any way he could repay her.
All she asked for in return was a signed photo of him and Bucky once the latter recovered for Morgan. Instead, he was high out of his mind, occasionally muttering something about Steve or Sam or whatever was going on in his drug-muddled brain at the time.
It was funny, and it let Sam relax a bit from the constant stress he felt whenever Bucky fell back asleep. A few days later, the doctors suggested they begin to wean him off the drugs. Sam hesitantly agreed, his mind first drifting back to the screaming and utter agony Bucky had been in.
Then the rational part of his mind told him that the serum had been doing its job—Bucky was healing, and at a much faster rate than expected. The first time Bucky woke up with less drugs in his system, there was an immediate difference. A day after that, he awoke with a cry and then quickly passed out again. The third time was when Bucky fully woke up, albeit a bit dazed. Awareness hit him like a ton of bricks as pain lit all of his senses on fire.
He wrenched his eyes open with a gasp, rapidly blinking at the bright lights shining down on him.
